Introducing Fleming’s centenary tree – Cercis canadensis ‘Merlot’[PBR]!

Cousin to the famous Cercis ‘Forest Pansy’, Cercis ‘Merlot’ [PBR] is sure to set hearts a-flutter with its rich deep purple glossy foliage and smaller tree form.  The tree also officially becomes the newest member of Fleming’s Enchanted Forest’® Collection of Cercis trees.

A stunning small to medium tree,‘Merlot’ [PBR] features rich burgundy foliage that is glossy and typical of the Cercis with large heart-shaped leaves. 

An excellent choice for a small garden or within a garden bed, this smaller deciduous tree will defoliate in winter but returns in early spring with a delightful show of bright pink pea-like flowers clustered along the branches.

Leaves will emerge shortly after the spring blossom display emerging in a mid-purple that deepens to a lovely dark purple as the seasons turn to summer.

The tree shape is open, vase like and grows well in a variety of situations including close to buildings and partially shaded areas.

Merlot has shown a good tolerance of tough, dry conditions once established however does best in quality, well-draining soils.

“ I have been a huge fan of the Forest Pansy and this tree is just as good. Merlot is providing to be smaller than Forest Pansy and has glossier, darker leaves that holds its colour in summer.  I seriously recommend this selection if you have a small garden and looking for a really beautiful tree that offers a springtime show with masses of pink flowers,” Wes said.
