Variable, but typically adult leaves are narrowly elliptical and a deep green colour and up to 10 cm long.

Bark
The bark is generally a mid-green colour becoming a grey colour as the tree ages. Can be lightly fissured. the bottle shaped trunk becomes more noticeable after five to eight years.

Ornamental Fruit
Seeds are produced in a woody boat shaped follicles. The seeds are surrounded by hairs which some people may find irritating. The follicles tend to persist on the tree for an extended period.

Tree Habit
Has a characteristic bulbous or swollen trunk that resembles a bottle and gives rise to the common name and makes this tree recognizable. Depending on the climate can be partly deciduous.

Flowers
Pale creamy-yellow, bell-shaped flowers are produced in clusters on the branches from spring thorugh to early summer. Flowers tend to be hidden within the foliage and are insignificant.
