Pears

Listing for Pears

European pears, although somewhat slow to come into full production will provide a valuable source of fruit from the home garden when mature. They are at their best if picked from the tree when slightly under-ripe, held in the refrigerator for a week or two and then taken out and allowed to ripen before eating. When ripe, the flesh becomes smooth. Several types of European pear are available from Fleming's from the smooth-skinned 'Williams' to the delicious but heavily-russetted 'Beurre Bosc'. Pears are ideal for heavier soils and slightly wetter planting areas. They form upright to spreading, medium sized trees and also respond very well to espalier and pruning to shape so are especially suitable for smaller gardens.
