Be BloomStruck by Fleming’s latest Endless Summer® Hydrangea
Fleming’s Nurseries is excited to announce the introduction of ‘BloomStruck’ PBR – the latest in the Endless Summer® Collection of repeat flowering Hydrangea.
This stunning mophead Hydrangea is particularly exciting for Australian growers and gardeners having consistently demonstrated a resistance to heat, as well as cold.
Considered a breeding breakthrough, this gorgeous Hydrangea continues to flower heavily following spring, even on old growth, and will reward proactive pruners with swathes of blooms on new growth.
BloomStruck’s PBR glossy dark green leaves are proving very heat resistant even in Australian conditions, which means this plant is less likely to wilt in the heat.
One of the most striking feature of this Hydrangea is it deep red stems and purplish juvenile foliage (matures to rich dark green) – and the richness of the blooms (which can be subject to pH levels) adds to the plants appeal.
Ensuring gardens are blooming from early to late summer and often beyond, the Endless Summer® collection are unique for their ability to continue flowering on old or new wood.
The advantage of this is two-fold – the longer blooming period means those with less time to tend to their garden are off the hook with a plant that continues to bloom – sometimes right through autumn!
Secondly – these Hydrangea may be pruned at any time of the year and without any precision on where a cut is made, and they will produce new flowers – where traditional Hydrangea need to be pruned in winter and to the right pair of buds to encourage flowers the next season.
The flowers are also ideal to be used as cut flowers, knowing that new flowers will be produced.
The Endless Summer® collection also comprises the Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bailmer’PBR Endless Summer® The Original, and Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Blushing Bride’ PBR and Hydrangea macrophylla Twist-n-Shout®; and are fast becoming the world’s most sought-after Hydrangea with sales across the US and Europe exploding.
Fleming’s director, Wes Fleming, said the popularity of the Endless Summer® varieties which were developed in the United States, is unprecedented both in the USA and Europe.
“ Endless Summer® are very new to Australia still, and word is just starting to spread on how beautiful and bountiful these plants are. In Europe growers are struggling to keep up with demand, and The States are busy developing new varieties,” he said.
“ We have been most impressed with BloomStruckPBR however – it is going to be huge in Australia because it will stand up so well in our summers … even on our hottest days our trial beds have shown staunch resistance to wilting which is a very common trait of Hydrangea.
“ BloomStruck PBR is quite defiant on hot days and with its dark red stems – it’s a beauty too. I cannot wait to watch as Australia discovers this Hydrangea – it’s going to knock socks off!”
Growers can further enhance the repeat flowering by pruning off spent (old) flowers.
