Typical of many Australian gardens this garden has been designed as an entertaining garden. It aims to unite the love that Australians have for outdoor living with modern architecture and greenspace. Incorporating a swimming pool and spa as well as a sunken lounge, functional kitchen area and a room that is protected from the elements the whole space is a stylish living space that offers the comforts of the home in the seclusion of a lush garden.
The constructed elements of this garden revolve around the central pool and spa. To one side is a multi-functional room that can be opened or closed according to the weather, allowing the space to be enjoyed year round. Also linked to the pool is a wet bar that forms part of a barbeque area offering space for entertaining. This area then merges into a sunken lounge covered by a rustic pergola. Retaining walls between the level changes and enclosing the perimeter of the garden serve a practical purpose and are rendered in solid colours.
The planting in this design has been selected for it’s suitability for use in proximity to hard structures, it’s tolerance for the shade that these buildings generate and it’s adaptability to the modified soil structure that typically occurs in constructed sites. The garden is suited to temperate and warmer climates and the plants have been selected to tolerate the weather conditions of these areas.
The plants have been selected to give a very dense, lush almost tropical feel to the garden.
Rather than a formal and controlled planting, visitors within the garden should feel that they
are in a jungle-like area that is the domain of the plants. The large habit and foliage of Strelitzia
alba dominates the built landscape and serves to soften the constructed elements of the design.
Clumping bamboo creates a sense of enclosure and also adds some quite dramatic vertical elements
to the whole design.
Plants in the lower canopy have been selected for their lush dark green foliage with textural interest.
Splashes of red and white in the plants mimic the colour features of the built components of the
garden.
Timber is used extensively within the garden, for the decking, seating within the lounge, as the main construction element of the pergola and for the rear wall of the garden. Timber has been selected for it’s capacity to add warmth to an area and the availability of recycled product. All materials, from the Anston Paving Stones to the bench tops and cabinetry, have been selected for their durability in outdoor conditions as well as their aesthetic attributes. Glass is used as the basis of a number of decorative elements within the garden, including the spa.
