The following is an alphabetial list of details and photos of the plants being used in the Flemings & Trailfinders show garden.

Anigozanthus species

Family: Haemodoraceae
Evergreen clump forming perennials that are an iconic Australian native plant. Fans of strap-shaped foliage arise from a short rhizome. The flowers that are responsible for the common name of Kangaroo Paw are borne on stems above the foliage. Each flowering spike is made up of tubular flowers, which can range in colour from red, yellow through to green and black. Each flower is densely covered with fine hairs. Flowers are produced from spring through to mid-summer and make a good cut flower. They prefer protection from frost and soil tolerances are dependent on the species.


Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata 'Black Barlow'

Commonly known as Granny's bonnets, these perennial bloomers offer a show of dark purple-plum coloured flowers in late spring through to early summer. Quite adaptable to soil types they prefer a full sun to lightly shade position. When soil is moist and free draining they can self seed prolifically. Flower spikes reach up to 75cm in height.


Aquilegia vulgaris 'William Guiness'

The bi-colored spring flowers are the feature of this cultivar. The petals are almost black in the centre and white on the outer edges. Flowering spikes can reach up to 90cm in height. Prefers positions with some shade and good moist, free draining soils.


Artemisia 'Powis Castle'

Family: Compostae
A small deciduous shrub with very finely dissected silver-grey foliage. An excellent foliage plant as it does not flower and maintains a neat compact shape. Selected from the National Trust Gardens at Powis Castle in Wales.
Is generally winter hardy, although will need some protection in the coldest areas of the UK.


Astelia chathamica 'Silver Spear'

Family: Asteliaceae
A showy evergreen foliage plant that produces clumps of silver spear shaped foliage that droops at the ends. Performs best in a rich well drained soil and full sun positions. Adapts well to drought once established and will cope with coastal conditions. In cold areas will benefit from some protection form the frost.

Betula utilis var. jacquemontii

Family: Betulaceae
Sometimes referred to as the Whitebarked Himalayan Birch, this tree is well known for its highly ornamental, white, peeling bark. This is a beautiful tree whether planted alone or in groups.

Carex comans bronze-leaved

An evergreen perennial plant forms a dense tufted clump. Foliage is hair like and warm bronze in colour to about 10cm in length. Flowers are inconspicuous and produced on brown flower spikes in mid to late summer. Generally frost hardy, but may be damaged by severe frosts.


Cirsium rivulare 'Atropurpureum'

Family: Astercaceae
A perennial plant with an erect habit. In summer produces heads of deep crimson flowers that a reminiscent of pin cushions. The foliage has a deeply serrated margin, with an almost spiky appearance. Adaptable to weather extremes including cold and heat. Will tolerate a range of soil types, but does not survived water logged soils. Can be propagated by seed in autumn or division in spring.


Clivia miniata

Family: Amaryllidaceae
Evergreen perennials that are grown for their showy, funnel shaped flowers that are produced from spring to summer. Flowers are borne in clusters of up to 20 nodding flowers and can range in colour from red through to orange and yellow. They are frost sensitive, prefer some shade and free draining soil. All parts of the plant will cause stomach upsets if ingested and the sap may cause mild skin irritations in some people.


Convolvulus cneorum

Family: Convolvulaceae
An evergreen shrub, noted for its silvery green foliage. The foliage has a silky smooth texture. The large pale pink to creamy white flowers are generally produced in late spring, but when the plant is in a well suited position it can flower sporadically for longer periods. Performs best in sites with well drained soils and full sun. Requires some winter protection from extreme cold of the UK winter.


Convolvulus sabatius

Family: Convolvulaceae
A trailing perennial with mid-green leaves. Flowers prolifically from summer through to early autumn. The lavender-blue flowers are produced in clusters in the leaf axils. Generally reaches about 15cm in height with a spread of about 50cm. May require some protection from the cold during winter in the UK.


Cordyline australis 'Atropurpurea'

Family: Agavaceae
A small to medium sized tree with dark purple foliage. It generally forms a single trunk that produces some ascending branches, each bearing a clump of large sword-like foliage. Produces small creamy white flowers in a terminal spike early in summer. Native to New Zealand it requires protection from the cold of the UK winter, but copes well with heat of the Australian summer.


Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple'

Family: Anarcardiaceae
A medium sized deciduous shrub with deep purple foliage. Produces spectacular autumn foliage with oranges and reds. Appears almost translucent in the sunshine. The development of autumn colour can be inhibited if the plants are too well fed.
In early to mid summer produces large panicles of tiny flowers that from a distance appear as smokey haze above the foliage. Perform best in well drained soils and full sun. May require some pruning in Spring to shorten any growth that has become too leggy and dead wood should be removed in winter. Tolerates cold well and will survive without winter protection.


Cycas revoluta

Family: Cycadaceae
Slow growing evergreen plants that are grown for their palm-like appearance. Initially they are upright in habit, but tend to produce suckers and become less structural with age. Pinnate leaves up to 1.5m long have dark green leaflets. Mature plants produce quite woolly flowers, but they are rarely seen in container grown plants. The male flowers have pineapple scent and the female flowers are followed by 3-4cm long fruit. They are frost sensitive and require protection from temperatures of less than approx 10 degrees celsius. Prefer full sun positions with good, free draining soils.


Cyperus papyrus

Family: Cyperaceae
Clump forming perennial that produces tall pithy and leafless stems that are distinctly 3-angled. These stems were flattened and dried and used as the basis of the first forms of paper by the Ancient Egyptians. At the top of the stem is a cluster of up to 200 fine thread-like rays that finish with a small brown flower at the end. Plants prefer high humidity. Each plant can reach up to 2m tall and can spread as wide as 1.2 metres.


Dichondra argentea 'Silver Falls'

Fan shaped silver foliage is the main feature of this dramatic ground covering plant. Is extremely heat and drought hardy once established. Prefers full sun positions to develop the best silver foliage colour. can also be used in hanging baskets as it can cascade up to 1.5 metres.


Dracaena draco

Family: Agavaceae
A slow growing tree that is widely branched when mature. Each branch ends with a rosette of waxy dark green, spine-tipped leaves that can each be up to 60cm in length. When mature green flowers with a white tinge are produced in terminal panicles about 30cm in length, in summer. The flowers are followed by spherical orange-red fruit. Native to the Canary Islands the Draecaea draco requires some protection from temperatures less than about 15 degrees celsius.


Euphorbia amygdaloides 'Purpurea'

Family: Euphorbiaceae
A semi-evergreen perennial that reaches a mature size of about 30cm tall, with a similar spread. The leaves and stems are green with a strong tinge of purple-red. Produces quite showy spikes with yellow cup shaped flowers. Can be susceptible to mildew attack. Tolerates the low temperatures of UK winters.

Festuca glauca

Family: Poaceae
A clump forming perennial grass that has quite striking silvery foliage. Produces panicles of flowers in summer. For best results should be divided every couple of years. Ideal for use as an edging plant, or groups as a striking foliage contrast.
Reaches about 15cm in height and spread.


Heuchera 'Tnheu041' Crème Brûlée

Family: Saxifragaceae
In early spring produces spikes of delicate flowers that can be used in cut flower arrangements. Removing the dead flower heads once flowering is finished allows the foliage to become a feature. With cold the foliage develops highlights that are the colour of brown sugar.
Does well in both sun and shade positions. Is quite drought hardy once established and will survive very the cold of the UK winter.


Heuchera 'Tnheu044' Licorice

Family: Saxifragaceae
In early spring produces spikes of delicate flowers that can be used in cut flower arrangements. Removing the dead flower heads once flowering is finished allows the dark purple to black foliage to become a feature. Does well in both sun and shade positions. Is quite drought hardy once established and will survive very the cold of the UK winter.


Hottonia palustris

Family: Primulaceae
Deciduous, perennial, submerged water plants that are noted for their foliage and the primula-like flowers. Tolerates all weather conditions, but prefers sun and cool, clear water (still or flowing). Overcrowded growth may require periodic thinning. Can be propagated by stem cutting in spring and summer.

Libertia formosa

Family: Iridaceae
A large clump forming perennial with deep green, stiff leathery leaves that can be up to 45cm long. Panicles of white flowers (sometimes with a pale yellow tinge) are produced from late spring to mid-summer. Prefer some protection from heavy frosts. Thrive in areas of humus-rich well drained soil and full sun.


Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum 'Plum Delight'

Family: Hamamelidaceae
An outstanding form of Loropetalum providing a compact, mounded habit and excellent foliage colour. Perfect for low borders and as a container specimen. The evergreen foliage provides year round colour with bright red new growth that fades to a richly coloured burgundy. Performs best in moist, well drained, acid soils with a high level of organic matter in a position receiving full sun to shade. Protect from severe frost.


Nymphaea species

Family: Nymphaeaceae
Deciduous, summer-flowering perennial water plants that are grown for the rounded foliage that floats on the surface of the water and their brightly coloured flowers. Cold hardiness is dependent on the species and cultivar. Prefer sunny position with still water. The plants have a rhizomes that should be divided and replanted in spring to early summer every couple of years. In small feature ponds any decaying foliage should be removed to prevent it polluting the water.


Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana'

Family: Liliaceae
An evergreen, clump forming, spreading perennial with dark green strap-like foliage. Produces small spikes of bell shaped flowers that are pale purple to white in colour, during summer. Fruit is followed by small fleshy dark blue fruit. Prefer humus rich soils that are free draining. Tolerates both full sun and partial shade. Generally copes well with frosts


Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens'

Family: Liliaceae
An evergreen, clump forming, spreading perennial with almost black strap-like foliage. Produces small spikes of bell shaped flowers that are pale purple to white in colour, during summer. Fruit is followed by small fleshy dark blue fruit. Prefer humus rich soils that are free draining. Foliage colour is at its best in full sun locations. Generally copes well with frosts


Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’

Family: Poaceae
A densely tufted deciduous grass that is often grown as an annual in colder climates. Has upright narrow, dark purple foliage that creates a dramatic feature in the garden. From summer through to autumn produces spikes of fluffy flower heads that are deep crimson in colour. Prefers light well-drained soils and full sun locations.


Phlox divaricata 'Clouds of Perfume'

Family: Polemoniaceae
A semi-evergreen spreading perennial that produces masses of flowers in early summer. Foliage is quite hairy. Does best in fertile, well drained soils and partial shade. Performs well even in areas of frost.


Phormium 'Platt's Black'

Family: Phormicaeae
A large evergreen shrub, native of New Zealand. Produces clumps of rigid deeply coloured sword-like leaves that can be up to 3m in length. In summer produces spikes of bronze-red flowers that extend up to 4 metres in length. Performs well in all types of soils and will tolerate coastal conditions as well as industrial pollution.

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Diabolo' syn. Monlo

Family: Rosaceae
An exciting new ninebark selection, grown predominately for its attractive dark purple foliage, P. opulifolius 'Diabolo' syn. Monlo provides effective colour contrast when planted alone or in groups in park and garden shrub borders.

Prunus lusitanica

Family: Rosaceae
A small evergreen from Portugal that forms a small tree or large shrub, producing a dense cover of evergreen foliage. It responds well to clipping and may be used as a hedge or screen. This hardy plant will adapt to a range sites. Requires full sun and good drainage for optimum performance. Will tolerate some drought and heat once established but will give best results in evenly moist soils. Tolerates cold well.


Salvia × sylvestris 'Mainacht'

Family: Lamiaceae
A clump forming perennial that produces dramatic spikes of large indigo-blue flowers from early to mid-summer. Mid-green leaves are softly hairy, often with a wrinkled appearance. . Reaches up to 70cm in height.


Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace'

Family: Caprifoliaceae
An exciting new form of Sambucus nigra with richly coloured foliage that is deeply cut giving a delicate lacy appearance.
Tolerant of a wide range of soil types in a position receiving full sun to shade. If desired, it can be pruned heavily to restrict the size in the landscape.


Semiaquilegia Australian Form

A very pretty clone selected from Australia. has delicate pale pink to white flowers in spring. Does best in light shade and copes well with dry sites. Flowers can reach up to 45cm in height.


Sesleria caerulea

Family: Poaceae
Essentially trouble free mound forming evergreen perennial. Quite vigorous in its growth, it produces pale blue-grey linear leaves that are a darker green on the underside. From mid-spring through to early summer produces purplish-blue spikelets that sit just above the foliage. Prefers to be grown in areas that are well drained and neutral to slightly alkaline in pH. Tolerates both full sun and dappled shade.


Silene fimbriata

Family: Caryophyllaceae
Reaching 60cm in height and width and producing white flowers in early summer these plants perform best in good soils and either full sun or part shade.


Stipa tenuissima

Family: Poaceae
A deciduous perennial with a dense tufted habit and very fine, almost filament like dark green foliage. Produces softly nodding flower spikes in summer that begin as greenish white and age to a more brown colour. Can reach up to 60cm in height with a spread of 30cm. Prefers positions in full sun and with well drained soils.


Thymus species

Family: Lamiaceae
A small evergreen shrub with aromatic foliage. Useful for growing in rock gardens, troughs and within paving. Frost hardiness is dependent on the species and cultivar. Prefers sun and moist, free draining soils. Can be propagated by cutting in summer.


Tiarella 'Spring Symphony'

Lovely pink flowers are produced in spring. The flowers contrast well with the dark palmate leaves with black highlights. Prefers good soils and part shade. Reaches about 25cm in height and spread.
