Aussie Team Strikes Gold Again At Chelsea

The only Australian Garden at the world famous Chelsea Flower Show has won a Gold Medal in the Show Garden category.

Judges today named the Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden team, led by nurseryman Wes Fleming and designer Dean Herald as a Gold Medal Show Garden winner.

The win, announced at 4pm Melbourne time (7am UK time) is the second Gold Medal for Wes Fleming.

“This prestigious award makes us very proud of Australian design and horticulture and reaffirms we do possess great talent at an international level. I am ecstatic our team has won this award,” said Wes Fleming.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard but we knew from the onset this garden was going to be a winner. The garden possesses all the enviable qualities of Australian lifestyle and after the weather we have experienced here, everyone here at Chelsea wants a piece of it.”

The winning garden can be seen at www.flemings.com.au/australiangarden

For 14 days, the team worked “around the clock”, battling English weather conditions to produce a stunning looking garden. Chelsea attracts the crème of the landscaping industry from around the world.

Dean’s design takes the great Aussie BBQ to a completely new level. The garden incorporates a fully functional outdoor kitchen, sunken lounge and dining area. A teppanyaki cooking plate, fridge, sink, benches and storage cupboards are sheltered under a timber gazebo. An outdoor fireplace, with a stack of firewood as a wall feature, means the garden can be enjoyed all year round. The garden won a gold award at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show, as well as the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria’s Comeadow award.

Fleming’s was the driving force behind the first ever Australian show garden at Chelsea in 2004. The garden, ‘Australian Inspiration’ won a Silver-Gilt medal. In 2005 Fleming’s returned to Chelsea with ‘Float’ and won Gold, the first Australian show garden to ever win the prestigious award.

The Chelsea Flower Show is open to the public between 23 – 27 May, in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital in London.

This year support from the industry, as well as key sponsorship from Tourism Victoria, Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development (Victoria), have helped give exposure to Australian design.

One week to go for Aussie team at Chelsea

Only 7 more days until the only Australian team at the world renowned Chelsea Flower Show will be judged for their efforts.

Next Tuesday 23 May (4pm Australian time and 7am UK time) the Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden presented by Trailfinders, led by Wes Fleming and designer Dean Herald, will hear the judges’ verdict on the 19 Show Garden entries competing at the 2006 show.

Daily updates of photos of the Aussie teams progression can be found at www.flemings.com.au/australiangarden/blog.htm

The team is working around the clock. Hard structures of the garden are completed, the water feature dining table installed and two recently planted Xanthoreas trees are causing a stir amongst exhibitors. In the next days the kitchen will be fully installed, paving will go down and planting commences.

Construction is not without its challenges. The rear hedge featuring Ligustrum shrubs is not responding well to the pressure and needs around the clock TLC.
Chelsea attracts the crème of the landscaping industry from around the world. With sights placed on winning best in show, the stakes are high.

Cancer Research UK and Laurent Perrier gardens are proving tough competition for the Australian Garden, but team spirit is outstanding.

The Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden presented by Trailfinders, is designed by award winning landscape designer Dean Herald from Rolling Stone Landscapes, based in Sydney.

Ninety tonnes of construction material and equipment has already been shipped from Australia and the team of 12 will commence construction on 5 May.

Judging takes place on 22 May and the Show is open to the public between 23 – 27 May, in the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital in London.

“Dean and I have no doubt that the Australian Garden will create an impact. We bring something different to Chelsea. Our designs are sharp and contemporary.

“We’ve got an outstanding design and we need to build this garden meticulously.”

This year support from the industry, as well as the Victorian Government, Eden Gardens and Alpine Nurseries, have helped give exposure to Australian design.

Fleming’s aim is to showcase Australian horticulture and design at an international level.

About the Fleming's Nurseries Australian Garden

The Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden presented by Trailfinders at the 2006 Chelsea Flower Show is an adaptation of the garden that won a gold medal and the prestigious RHS Comeadow Award at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2005.

Designed by Dean Herald, it is a tailored space designed for a complete outdoor lifestyle. The intention is for the entire garden to be modern and sophisticated whilst still having a relaxed and comfortable feel.

The garden design takes the barbeque concept to a new level with a fully functional outdoor kitchen, by Kastell Kitchens in Sydney. A teppanyaki cooking plate has stools placed around to allow guests to interact with their hosts while they prepare the meal. The kitchen area cleverly incorporates a fridge, sink and storage cupboards that seamlessly blend in with the overall feel of the garden. A timber gazebo allows open views and ensures that it is not the dominating feature, but still offers protection from the weather.

A large chimney from the outdoor fireplace provides a structural and practical element. The circular ‘window’ in the surrounding wall helps add a feeling of spaciousness as well as an additional viewing point. Stacked firewood adds to the design, while fulfilling the practical role of firewood supply for the fireplace.

Around the chimney, a cushioned Dedon lounge offers a retreat where the family and guests can enjoy the warmth of the fireplace. The sunken lounge promotes intimacy. Stone clad walls and timber decked floors add warmth and texture.

The water feature is incorporated in the dining table; water travels between sheets of glass and cascades into the pond below. Subtly lit at night, this forms a beautiful space to sit around. To ensure conversation flows, the table is inscribed with inspirational quotes.

The gentle movement of water through the garden ties all the separate areas together and provides two focal water features, one at each end of the garden, the table at one end, and a flat feature of glass mosaic tiles which water trickles down to form a moving wall, at the other.

For young children a play area featuring a sandpit and blackboard is incorporated near the cooking area. This also has flowerbeds around it designed to encourage children to experiment with growing their own herbs, veggies and flowers.

The garden is designed to be low maintenance, so the plants are all easy care and, once established, will require very little water.

News in Brief

  • The outdoor kitchen takes the built in barbeque concept to new level. It incorporates all the elements of an indoor kitchen - fridge, sink, worktops, cooking area and more, reflecting a growing trend of having two kitchens, one indoors and one out. This design moves the ‘heart’ of the home outside and encourages more time spent al fresco with family and friends.
  • The transparent ‘water table’ designed by Dean Herald at Rolling Stone Landscapes, cleverly incorporates a functional garden feature with an ornamental water feature – emphasising the mix of functionality and design in Dean’s gardens. The table is also inscribed with inspiring and humorous quotations to stimulate conversation.
  • The inclusion of a special play area for children means all the family can be involved in the garden. A sandpit and blackboard keeps the little ones happy while older children can ‘chill’ in the sunken lounge with their friends. The flower beds around the play area are designed to encourage children to grow plants and herbs and learn about gardening from an early age.
  • Grasses and flaxes form the major part of the planting reflecting the trend towards complimentary and contrasting foliages with a mixture of textures, shapes and sizes to achieve variety.
  • Once established, the garden uses little water and is low maintenance.

About the designer - Dean Herald

Dean Herald founded Rolling Stone Landscapes 11 years ago when he was just 19 and specialises in designing large garden projects for the prestige residential market in Sydney.

His garden design for this year’s Chelsea Flower Show 2006 previously won a gold medal at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in 2005. Simultaneously the garden received the coveted Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria’s Comeadow Award for the most outstanding landscape designer at the same show.

Dean has been highly successful on his initial outings winning a gold medal at each of his three appearances at the Sydney in Bloom show.

For Dean, function comes first with horticulture following afterwards. He recognises that around 70% of Australians are not gardeners in the traditional sense, but just about everyone loves being outdoors. His love of gardens and an interest in the way people utilise outdoor spaces began at an early age. His designs have to be coherent, transcend the seasons and be relatively low maintenance with their planting.

Dean is now an established figure on the Australian gardening scene, enhanced further by his involvement with the TV program, The Block.

This is his first time designing a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show.

About Flemings Nurseries - Leaders in Australia for over 80 years

Fleming’s Nurseries are Australia’s leading growers, importers and wholesalers of deciduous fruiting and ornamental trees and shrubs. They are the largest importers of new tree cultivars into Australia and are always looking for new opportunities to introduce new varieties to the Australian market.

The Melbourne based nursery has 300 hectares under propagation, land holdings of 1000 hectares and plants 1.75 million plants every year. Three crops are in the ground at any one time, with a total of 5 million plants being tended at annually. Fruit trees produced include apples, apricots, nectarines, peaches and plums as well as more unusual fruits such as quinces, medlars and pomegranates.

Fleming’s ornamental trees range from alders to zelkovas; colourful maples, birches and varieties of ash. Trees are selected for a variety of purposes: shape, shade or colour to name a few. Fleming’s look to import trees and shrubs that suit urban gardens where low maintenance for working families is essential. Cultivars of hibiscus, hydrangea and viburnum are just a few of the shrubs that have also been imported.

The current retail pre-trend in Australia is for smaller trees that complement the urban lifestyle, narrow trees are very important because they do not encroach on too much of the garden. Also Fleming’s specially selected `Designer` trees naturally form a round head and hold their shape without the need for pruning. Fleming’s have been responsible for introducing some of the best Autumn colouring trees the world has to offer into the Australian industry. An example of this would be the Lipstick® Maple range including Acer rubrum October Glory® and Acer x freemanii Autumn Blaze®.

Fleming’s Nurseries sell to orchardists, retail garden centres, landscapers, local governments and developers. In 2005 Fleming’s launched a new division of the company called ‘Habittude’. The company’s motto is its vision – An attitude to creating the perfect urban habitat. Staff work directly with developers and offer a complete, integrated service that includes advice on tree selection and placement, together with the supply, installation and maintenance of trees and plants, all backed by a full establishment guarantee.

This is Fleming’s third year at The Chelsea Flower Show, bringing the Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden presented Trailfinders to the Show. The team are all very much hoping that this year’s garden will be as successful as the 2005 “Float” garden (constructed in collaboration with designer Jack Merlo and landscapers TLC) which won gold, building on Fleming’s silver gilt for the 2004 “Australian Inspiration” garden designed by Jim Fogarty.

Each year sees the four finalists in the Fleming’s Student Design Competition have their designs constructed at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. This competition also extends to New Zealand students via the Ellerslie Flower show. The overall winner is flown over to the Chelsea Flower show to see this vast display of contemporary British garden design.

Don Fleming’s green fingered career started at just thirteen when he and his five brothers took over the family rootstock nursery. In 1983 Don and his children Dani, Graham and Wes became responsible for the ownership and management of the nursery. Since then the business has more than quadrupled employing over 100 full time staff and covering 1000 hectares of nursery. They have also imported over 2,300 new fruit and ornamental cultivars into Australia over the past 15 years. Fleming’s established Australia’s first private quarantine screen house for fruiting cultivars as well as virus tested multiplication blocks to ensure that trees are of the highest health status possible in Australia.

Australian Garden Set To Sizzle At Chelsea

Fleming’s Nurseries returns to the world famous Chelsea Flower Show for the third time in 2006 with a garden highlighting the passion Australians have for outdoor entertaining.

The Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden presented by Trailfinders, is designed by award winning landscape designer Dean Herald from Rolling Stone Landscapes, based in Sydney.

Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden is an adaptation of Dean Herald’s multi-award winning garden, which won a gold medal at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show in 2005, as well as the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria’s Comeadow award.

Dean’s design takes the great Aussie BBQ concept to a new level completely. The garden incorporates a fully functional outdoor kitchen, sunken lounge and dining area. A teppanyaki cooking plate, fridge, sink, benches and storage cupboards are sheltered under a timber gazebo. An outdoor fireplace, with the quintessential stack of firewood as a wall feature, means the garden can be enjoyed all year round.

The dining table will be a definite show stopper and is a patented design by Dean Herald. The table doubles as a water feature with water flowing through sheets of glass and into a pond below. The table is inscribed with inspirational quotes to prompt conversation.

Grasses and flaxes form the major part of the planting reflecting the trend towards complimentary and contrasting foliages with a mixture of textures, shapes and sizes. The garden will be low maintenance, requiring little water.

Kids are welcome in Fleming’s Nurseries Australian Garden. A specially designed play area features a sandpit and blackboard; and inbuilt flowerbeds will encourage children to grow their own herbs, veggies and flowers.

Fleming’s Director, Wes Fleming is excited about returning to Chelsea.

“Dean and I were in the UK in January to brief international media and we have no doubt that the Australian Garden will turn heads.

“The response has already been extremely positive. Australia’s outdoor lifestyle is the envy of anyone living in the UK – and this garden combines life with style in the best possible way.”

Fleming’s aim is to showcase Australian horticulture and design at an international level.

Fleming’s were the driving force behind the first ever Australian show garden at Chelsea in 2004. The garden, ‘Australian Inspiration’ won a Silver-Gilt medal. In 2005 Fleming’s returned to Chelsea with ‘Float’ and won gold, the first Australian show garden to ever win the prestigious award.
